Everyday, teachers at MMS come from all over New Jersey. Many have a long daily commute in order to reach students here. Millburn Middle School has teachers from North and South Jersey, and some of these teachers drive for more than an hour.

Recently, the New Jersey government passed a new gas tax that increased the price of gas by 23 cents. This new tax has affected many drivers, including teachers here in Millburn Middle School. When New Jersey’s legislature passed this new tax, speculation began about whether the tax was a catalyst for even more tax change. It may not seem a lot, but the costs add up.

The Millburn Penpoint has decided to ask for the opinions of the Millburn Middle School teachers regarding the new tax.

Mr. Purcell, an eighth grade social studies teacher from Easton, Pennsylvania had lots to say on this controversial gas tax.

Q: How does the gas tax affect you?“

A: It is a tax increase of about $600 dollars. I have a long drive and takes a lot of gas.”

Q: Is there a gas tax in Pennsylvania?

A: “There is, but the gas price in Pennsylvania has always been more. So I always get my gas filled up in New Jersey. Now, they are around the same. Before I enter Pennsylvania, I fill up.”

Q:  Why do you think they raised the gas taxes?

A: I think they need money to fix the roads and infrastructure of the state. Unfortunately, they used the money for that for other things in the past, which I hope they will not do again.”

Q: How will you change your transportation?

A: “I am going to try to drive less and combine chores into fewer trips.
