The holiday season is a time when many children get meaningful gifts.

But put yourself in the shoes of a struggling family, where you can’t afford to get any gifts. What if you could give someone the money to get a life changing surgery done as present for the holiday season? To help with this issue, the PLOP Peer Leaders are working hard to organize a candy cane drive in the main hallway for December.

The money from this drive goes to Operation Smile, an organization that provides a life changing surgery for children with cleft palates. To educate myself about this charity event, I interviewed Ms. Kirk, the PLOP advisor.

When is this happening?

“It is happening from December 1 to December 22.”

How much does one candy cane cost?

“A candy cane costs $1.”

Where does the money from the candy cane drive go to?

“The money goes to Operation Smile, which provides surgery for children with cleft palates.”

What are PLOP Peer Leaders doing for this sale?

“It’s cash and carry. The PLOP Peer Leaders will be donating candy canes and then manning the sales table. It’s cash and carry; we give you a candy cane, and you give us a dollar. There is a huge variety; there are sweet tarts, lemonheads, etc.”

How does this relate to the spirit of the holiday season?

“Many of the children come from underserved areas and would otherwise not be able to have this life changing surgery. By purchasing a candy cane we can help change another child’s life.”

Last year, we sold 800 candy canes, so we were able to donate $800. This total may be extremely high, but what if we could beat 800 candy canes, and try to aim for 1000 or higher?”
