Throughout the last year, the political climate has changed drastically in our country, and our state. To learn Millburn Middle School’s political opinions, two PEN peer leaders decided to immerse themselves in all the three grades’ lunches to ask three questions: whether or not people knew the last governor, whether or not they knew the current governor (who was sworn in on Tuesday, January 16th), and whether or not they approved of President Trump’s job so far.

The results (shown in the charts above) were pretty close on most questions. For the first question, although one might expect the 8th graders to be the most informed, 5% more of the 7th graders knew who the last governor (Chris Christie) was than the higher grade.

For the second question, there was a very large discrepancy between the grades. 8th grade knew the answer more than 6th grade, and grade 7 had, by far, the fewest correct answers, with only 9% of the people polled knowing that Phil Murphy is the current governor.

Finally, on the topic of President Trump’s approval rating, the far majority of people said that they were not satisfied with his first year in office. In the grades 8 and 7, a very similar amount of people did not have enough knowledge to offer an opinion, far more than 6th grade’s 6%. In 7th grade, slightly more people also approved of the president than in the other grades, while the 6th graders had the largest percentage who disapproved.

This poll also took into account the gender of the people polled (as shown in the chart below).

After polling, the general information gained was that the males were slightly more informed than the females when it came to the current New Jersey government. When it came to the question about the president, significantly more males approved of President Trump’s work than females, and almost the same amount of people did not know whether or not they approved.

Across the board, many more people knew about the last New Jersey governor, Chris Christie, than they did about Phil Murphy, the current governor. Also, the general political atmosphere in Millburn Middle School is geared towards disapproval of President Trump’s first year.

However, with the start of the new year, politics and feelings may change.
